Planting Instructions: Soil Preparation: To prepare soil, remove weeds, large rocks, and litter from the planting area. Leave small weeds and dead grass, they will enrich the soil when turned under. Spade the soil 8-12 inches deep and turn each shovel of soil over completely to cover the plant materials with soil. You may add fertilizer or 2-3 inches of organic material such as compost, leaves, or rotted hay over the planting area at this point. Till to mix this organic material into the top 8-10 inches of soil. Make rows of soil beds 4-6 inches high and at least 2 feet apart. This formation of ridges will help with drainage. Grows best in moist soil rich in organic matter. Planting: Plant 1-2 inches deep in late Fall or early Spring after a killing frost. Rhubarb seeds can be directly sown in the garden anytime between late Fall and early-Spring. If sowing after Spring, cold stratification may be needed for seeds to break dormancy and initiate germination. If sowing after Spring, mix the seed with moist sand and store it in the refrigerator for 30 days before direct sowing. Insecticides: Insecticides may be used to protect plants, though rhubarb is relatively free of insect and disease problems. Bt-based insecticides and sulfur are organic options that can be used for prevention. Sulfur also has fungicidal properties and helps in controlling many diseases. Before using a pesticide, read the label and always follow cautions, warnings and directions. Diseases: Check the plants daily and if spots or mold appear, treat the plant with an approved fungicide. Harvesting: Stalks may be harvested for 1 or 2 weeks during the second year and for 8 to 10 weeks (a full harvest season) during the third and subsequent years. Harvest stalks only, do not eat the rhubarb leaves. Select firm, crisp stalks when they are 8 to 15 inches long. To harvest, twist off the leaf stalk at the soil line and cut off the leaf. Do not harvest more than a third of the leaves in any year to keep the plant going strong.
