Of all the scores of different lavenders, this one - Lavandula angustifolia, or Lavender Vera, meaning "True Lavender" - is arguably the most popular. A delicate and versatile variety, lavender is especially cherished for its elegant appearance and lovely scent. This lavender is fast-growing, long-blooming, and very hardy. It can even be used to flavor select desserts like sorbet and ice cream! Planting instructions: Sowing: Refrigerate the English lavender seeds for a month before planting. Plant them just below the surface in soil that drains well, and keep them at a temperature of 60-64 degrees F. Keep the soil moist with a spray bottle to prevent over watering, and shield them from the hottest sun. Germination may take up to a month, and plants will reach a suitable size for transplanting in about 6 months; transplanting can take place either in late spring or fall. Transplant them to bigger pots as carefully as possible to avoid disturbing the roots. Lavender plants prefer full sun and soil that drains well, even rocky or sandy soil. Plant them 24-36" apart in rows 30-36" apart to allow enough space for growth. With proper handling, English lavender seeds can grow in containers; lavender also makes an excellent hedge that attracts birds, bees, and butterflies and repels deer and rabbits. Growing: The proper amount of moisture is crucial to young lavender plants. Too much water is deadly, but until they are established they need soil that is fairly moist. Mature plants can tolerate drought conditions, but must not become dehydrated. Mulching the plants with gravel or small shells can be helpful to absorb heat and control weeds; being a Mediterranean plant, lavender loves rocky soil. In the plant's first year of growth, pruning the flowers that appear will help it to grow healthy roots and foliage. Mature plants also benefit from yearly, careful pruning. Harvesting: The best time to harvest lavender is in the morning after the dew has dried. For drying, harvest stalks with just a few buds open; at this stage the fragrant oils have reached their peak. For fresh use, harvest stalks with more of the buds open. Dry bundles of lavender upside down in a cool, dark place for a week or more; to save the buds, strip them from the stalks. Seed Saving: In the late summer, the flowers will fade and the seeds begin to develop. Remove the stalks individually as they begin to dry and the seeds mature, and spread them out to finish drying away from direct sunlight. Thresh them to remove the seed. Store the seed in a cool, dry place. Peppermint (Mentha Piperita) - There are several different types of mint: spearmint, bergamot, applemint, and Bowles mint; but Peppermint is generally the most wide spread in terms of usage. Peppermint seeds are easy to grow and the mature herb plant is pretty easy to identify by its dark green to purplish leaves. This herb typically grows around 24 inches tall or more, and consists of purplish, square stems and oblong purplish leaves with pointed tips, distinct veins, and toothed edges. Sowing: Mint grows well in rich soil and partial shade, and damp soil. Direct sow after the last spring frost, thinning the seedlings to 10-12". Keep in mind that mint spreads easily and can nearly take over the space it is planted in. Because of this, some gardeners prefer to grow mint in an isolated location or as a container plant because of its vigorous spreading habit. As a companion plant, mint benefits nearly every garden plant and repels many harmful insects. Mint also grows well from root cuttings or by division. Growing: Mint appreciates rich soil, and will benefit from organic matter such as compost. Keep the soil fairly moist, but avoid getting the leaves wet when watering, since this can cause disease. In areas with cold winters, cut the plant down to the ground after frost and provide a thick layer of mulch for protection. Harvesting: Fresh leaves can be harvested as soon as the plant reaches a height of 3-4". The small, young leaves tend to have the best flavor. Cut the stems down to within 1" of the ground level to allow for new growth. Keep the tops pruned to prevent blooming, since this causes the leaves to deteriorate in flavor. To dry the leaves, hang the stems upside down in a dry location until the leaves feel completely dry; strip them from the stems and keep them in an airtight container. Fresh mint leaves can also be frozen. Seed Saving: Since many types of mint produce sterile seed or seed that is not true to type, saving the seed may be somewhat of an experiment. Harvest the seed heads as soon as they grow dry and brown; spread them out to finish drying out of sunlight, then thresh them to remove the seed. Store the peppermint seed in a cool, dry place. Marshmallow Seeds - Althea officinalis - it is native to Europe but can be found growing in many places around the world. It is easy to grow from Marsh Mallow seeds, and it also makes a lovely flowering display as well as having therapeutic benefits. Sowing: Direct sow the seed in late summer or early fall; the seed will remain dormant until spring. If not planted in the fall, these seeds will need to be stratified to break their dormancy. Mix the seed with an equal amount of sand and store it in the refrigerator for 4-6 weeks. Start the seeds indoors in a flat, just below the surface. Keep the soil evenly moist and at a temperature of 70 degrees F until sprouting. The germination rate may be naturally low. As soon as the seedlings can be safely handled and there is no chance of frost, transplant them. Growing: Since this plant naturally grows in marshy ground, the plants will need to be watered well to keep the soil moist. It prefers moist to wet soil and full sun, though it also adapts to well-drained soil. Plants can also be propagated by division. A layer of mulch will help conserve moisture and control weeds. Here is another of our prized offerings: 2000+ STINGING NETTLE SEEDS HEIRLOOM SPRING PERENNIAL HERB MEDICINAL POLLINATORS * The Non-GMO Stinging Nettle is probably my favorite farm plant because it can be used in countless ways. * It is a cornerstone plant in Organic farming, Permaculture and Biodynamic farming. * The Stinging Nettle has a root system that is like a nutrient sponge. It can extract elements from the soil that our domesticated vegetable plants cannot easily do. * Stinging Nettle is referred to as a hyperaccumulator plant. In addition, the leaves and stems can be composted to create an almost perfect fertilizer that is well balanced! * It is wonderful for making a balanced, organic liquid fertilizer. Just steep the stems and leaves in a bucket of water for a day or so, and use on your plants that are ailing, and it should quickly revive them. * Many Permaculturists consider Stinging Nettle to be the most important plant on their farms. * The stinging part of Nettles can be neutralized with exposure to high heat for 30 seconds. Always, exercise caution when handling or preparing Stinging Nettle. Make sure it is properly heated before consuming and wear gloves when handling to avoid stinging. * After the plant has been heated properly, it can be added to stews, soups etc...and many love the taste! * It enjoys moist soil and will thrive in lower, more water retentive parts of your lawn, and along forest edges where the soil is rich and moist. * Stinging Nettle is very good for making nutrient rich teas. * It is very rich in antioxidants and Vitamins. * Many beneficial insects, and, in particular, the Green Lacewing will use the Stinging Nettle plant to lay its larvae on. Ladybugs prefer Stinging Nettle foliage as well. * Alcoholic and Non-Alcoholic beverages are made from the Stinging Nettle plant parts. * It is also used for many medical purposes but consult your Physician before ingesting Stinging Nettle. Culture Notes:Prepare the containers: Fill small pots or seed trays with a well-draining seed starting mix like a brand such as Espoma or Jiffy.Sow the seeds: Sprinkle the seeds over the surface of the soil and then gently press them into the soil. Do not cover the seeds with soil as they need light to germinate.Water the seeds: Use a spray bottle to gently mist the soil to keep it moist, but not soaking wet.Provide heat and light: Place the pots in a warm, sunny location or under grow lights. Stinging nettles germinate best at temperatures between 70-75°F (21-24°C).Keep the soil moist: Regularly mist the soil to keep it moist, but not soaking wet.Monitor for germination: Stinging nettle seeds should germinate in about 1-2 weeks. Once the seedlings have emerged, you can begin to water them more thoroughly.Transplant the seedlings: Once the seedlings have a couple of sets of leaves, transplant them into individual pots or into a larger container.Gradually acclimate the seedlings to the outdoors: After all danger of frost has passed, you can begin to harden off the seedlings by gradually exposing them to outdoor conditions. After a week or two, they should be ready to be planted in your garden.Remember, it is important to keep the soil moist, but not soaking wet, and to provide adequate light and warmth for the seeds to germinate and grow.
